Overview
The August 2026 Board Meeting agenda included community participation, student and staff recognition, updates from district departments and administrators, superintendent updates, board business items, handbook and policy discussions, and other district operations.
Recognizing Summer Intern Contributions
The district recognized summer interns for their work supporting district operations during the summer.

Their work included preparing and resetting devices, supporting technology projects, and assisting with a high school rewiring project.

Their responsibilities included grounds work, HVAC filter changes, flooring project support, weight room flooring installation assistance, and learning electrical work.
The district highlighted the interns’ teamwork, independence, work ethic, and contributions toward preparing schools for the 2026–2027 school year.
District Updates
Activities Department
Facility Improvements
The high school weight room renovation was completed, with new equipment installed. The district noted that additional finishing touches and branding work remain planned for the space.
The middle school weight room also received improvements intended to provide younger students with a quality training environment.
Scoreboards and Video Boards
New scoreboards and video boards have been installed. Staff completed initial training and are developing content to highlight students, teams, activities, and business partners during competitions.
Auditorium Improvements
The auditorium lighting and sound project was nearing completion. Staff received training on the new lighting system, which will provide additional options for concerts, performances, productions, and other events.
Karr Athletic Complex
New audio additions at the Karr Athletic Complex were completed. The district also continued work on improving livestreaming capabilities for families, alumni, and fans following activities online.
Student Activities Participation
The district discussed planning for implementation of House File 2591 related to eighth-grade participation in high school activities. The goal described was to create a process considering student opportunities, safety, program needs, and middle school program impacts.
Buildings & Maintenance Updates
Middle School Projects
The epoxy flooring project at the middle school was completed. Carpet replacement work was nearing completion, and the HVAC project was progressing with expected completion before the start of the school year.
High School HVAC Planning
The district reviewed potential future replacement needs for several classroom HVAC units. One unit was confirmed for replacement, with pricing received and an estimated lead time of approximately 7–8 weeks after ordering.
Transportation Update
The Transportation Department provided an update on 2026–2027 bus routes, including the addition of a route to Palo, Iowa, and renewal of a route to Urbana, Iowa.
School Building Updates
High School
The high school report included goals focused on reducing chronic absenteeism through an early warning system and improving course-passing rates in English language arts and mathematics.
Additional updates included:
- Advisor Release participation data for the second semester, including a monthly average of 127 students meeting criteria.
- Second semester referral data showing 77 total major referrals involving 33 students.
- ACT results for the 2026 junior class.
- New instructional staff additions and summer school participation.
- Northport enrollment information and upcoming open house events.
Middle School
The middle school reported summer facility improvements, including completed flooring work, parking lot improvements, and planned concrete work for gaga pits.
The school also welcomed new teachers, completed staff preparation activities, and prepared for the start of the school year.
Elementary School
The elementary report highlighted building preparation efforts, curriculum work completed by staff during the summer, and preparation for the upcoming school year.
Upcoming events included Elementary Back to School Night on August 20 and kindergarten conferences.
Superintendent Updates
The superintendent reported on a recent superintendent/board workshop focused on communication, board priorities, goals, and strategic planning discussions.
Staff listening sessions included more than 70 one-on-one conversations with employees across district areas.
Community roundtable sessions in Vinton and Shellsburg included more than 65 community members collectively, with another session scheduled for August 18 at the Garrison Library.
The district also continued updates on building projects and facility improvements, including flooring, the high school weight room, parking lot work, and other summer projects.
Financial and Operational Items
Financial Position
The July Treasurer’s Report indicated that the district ended the month in a good financial position. Reported balances included:
- Total book and bank balances: $16.68 million
- General Fund balance: approximately $5.92 million
The report also stated that the Debt Service Fund was at $0 because the district had paid off remaining debt, including laptop leases through Apple.
Contracts, Personnel, and Operations
Contracts and Agreements
Agenda items included:
- Annual HVAC maintenance contract with Air Service, Inc.
- Gallagher Benefit Services consulting agreement for the 2026–2027 school year
